Naworth is a former railway station, which served the hamlet of Naworth in Cumbria. The station served the Tyne Valley Line between 1871 and 1952.

History

[edit]

The station opened in June 1871 by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. However, there are press references to a 'Naworth Gate' station as early as 1867, and it appears on the 1869 Ordnance Survey map so was evidently in operation earlier, possibly as a private station for Naworth Castle. It was closed to both passengers and goods traffic on 5 May 1952.[1][2][3]

Accident

[edit]

On 30th August 1926, an express passenger train from Newcastle to Carlisle, collided with a motor Charabanc, carrying sixteen passengers, two of them being children, which were permitted to cross by a new gate keeper. Seven including the children and the gate keeper were killed, one died shortly afterwards, three including the motor driver were seriously injured, and three received minor injuries or shock. The dead were laid to rest in the woods near to the level crossing, and are said to haunt the area with the screams of the children.
